ABOUT TONY MURPHY

TONY ON LOCATION AT BOULBY CLIFFS
TONY ON LOCATION AT BOULBY CLIFFS

Tony Murphy grew up in Ireland and borrowed his mother’s box brownie camera to capture on film the boats and activity on the Shannon river at Banagher. He studied Fine Art in Dublin and later trained as an art teacher in Manchester. He worked as a photographer in the North East and studied photography in Newcastle where he was awarded a distinction in Exhibition Printing.

As an artist and photographer, living in Staithes for the past fifteen years, much of Tony Murphy’s work reflects the incredibly stimulating environment. He has an eye for capturing the soft light effects of winter mornings and the saturated colour of the cliffs and harbour in the evening light. He has a highly developed sense of design, which is particularly evident in his close up work of boat anatomy - the Lady J series. He was awarded Licentiate Member of the Royal Photographic Society in 2004.

Lately, Tony has been concentrating on pencil drawing and pastel work which have been much admired. His pastel painting of boats in Staithes beck and harbour and of the people of Staithes reflect his strong sense of composition and his love of light effects.
